The Wall Remixed: The North Philadelphia Small Business Advertising Campaign is a multi-media collaboration among renowned artists Carl Pope, Mari Hulick and Homer Jackson, the Mural Arts Program and Philagrafika 2010. Using images created by students in the Mural Arts Program’s education program, the artists designed 25 billboards and posters that visually celebrate North Philadelphia’s small businesses and community organizations. The project is designed to increase awareness of resources and have a positive economic impact on businesses in this culturally mixed neighborhood.
Through our relationships, The Village and NET CDC facilitated artist Carl Pope’s connection with six local businesses and organizations to complete the project, exemplifying the role that a community organization can have on the vision of an artist.
The Village extends a warm welcome to Spells Writing Center! Over the holidays, Spells moved into the heart of The Village, and beginning this year, will be offering creative writing workshops and tutoring to school-aged children (6-18) and families in their new abode at 2526 N. Alder St, directly behind The Village's main programs building.
While sharing our facilities, Spells will remain a separate organization with its own operations and programs. Their commitment to learning through creativity is a perfect fit with our mission, and will offer much needed literacy-based programs to our youth. For more info on our new neighbor, visit phillyspells.org.

Scarecrows invade North Philadelphia! On Tuesday, October 22, forty neighborhood kids gathered on the front lawn of the Village to create twenty terrifying scarecrows, launching the first night of the TLC-organized Haunted House. The Haunted House continues this week, from 6-9 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Oct 27-29). Don't miss out on this bone-chilling, scream-inducing nightmare of an event.

Renaissance on Sacred Ground is a documentary about the power of African art forms, including music and dance, to transform the lives of everyday people. It tells the story of Ile Ife, the House of Love, an African cultural center located on Germantown Avenue in North Philadelphia and created by famed dancer choreographer, Arthur Hall. The young people who entered the doors of Ile Ife in the 1960s, drawn in by the sound of the African drum, over time became the members of the internationally known Arthur Hall Afro American Dance Ensemble.
Produced as part of Scribe’s Community Visions Program, Renaissance on Sacred Ground is a collaboration of the alumni of the Arthur Hall Afro American Dance Ensemble and young people from the Village of Arts and Humanities, which now occupies the same site, Renaissance on Sacred Ground looks at how a four decade tradition of cultural expression - rooted in African music and dance, has helped nurture and sustain a community.
The program will be preceded by short films produced by the young people participating in the Village Arts Challenge media program at the Village of Arts and Humanities.
Produced by Village of Arts & Humanities, Ile Ife alumni and Scribe Video Center
